The show for homes - 27/04/2007:
The way social housing could look in the future has been caught on camera.
Rhondda Cynon Taf has teamed up the Welsh Assembly’s ‘i2i – inform to involve’ project, and Torfean Council, to produce a lasting record of the show homes that were developed to illustrate how tenants’ homes might be brought up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
While the show homes are now being let, the Council and RCT Homes wanted other tenants to see how improvements – such as bathrooms, kitchens and external features – might look in their home.
The film has been funded by the Welsh Assembly’s ‘i2i – inform to involve’ project.
i2i work with councils, housing associations, volunteer organisations, tenants and councilors across the Heads of the Valleys to improve the quality of information that is provided on WHQS. Supporting a wide range of initiatives for tenants and residents to get involved and ensure that housing investment leads, not only to better homes, but also to the creation of local jobs and high quality training.
The Rhondda Cynon Taf film addresses some frequently asked questions from a tenant, Jan Hughes of Tonyrefail, who asks housing manager Ian Cavil about what tenants could expect from the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
Councillor Paul Cannon, Chair of RCT Homes, says: “The homes were an important and popular way for us to show tenants various examples of how the WHQS could look in reality.
“It would have been a shame to only have pictures of them, but luckily ‘i2i’ and Torfean were thinking the same as us and we were able to team up.
“As well as proving a good background to the Standard we’ll even be able to use the film to look at some choices tenants can make on the home improvements.”
Rhondda Cynon Taf ‘i2i’ officer, Elin Jones, commented ‘The idea behind the DVD is to capture not only the internal improvements that tenants can expect from WHQS investment, but also to show the environmental improvements to whole estates. The DVD has been shared widely and has proven to be a useful visual and informative tool for tenants, councilors and other organizations across Wales
